Bronchiectasis

Indications for antibiotics

• Increased sputum volume or viscosity

• Increased sputum purulence

• Increased cough with or without wheeze, breathlessness, coughing up blood

Antibiotics

• Amoxicillin 1g taken 8 hourly OR

• Doxycycline 100mg taken 12 hourly

Duration of antibiotics

• Expert consensus is to treat for 14 days

• If clinical response is rapid, shorten to 10 days

Management

• Exercise and pulmonary rehabilitation

  • Regular exercise - any sort

• Airway clearance
