Separation Anxiety

How to ease

Use a step ladder approach

Practice short periods of separation and gradually build up tolerance

Schedule separation after naps or feeding, hunger and tiredness can make it worse

Develop a quick “goodbye” ritual

Leave without fanfare. Tell your child you are leaving and that you will return, then go - don’t stall or make it a bigger deal

Follow through on promises, return at the time you promised, this develops confidence

Keep surroundings familiar where possible

Have a consistent primary caregiver e.g. regular baby sitter

Minimise scary exposures including television, videos, games

Try not to give in. Reassure your child they will be fine and set consistent limits
